Red ribbon stretched across three decorative barriers in front of the southeast entrance of the Campus Center April 9.

A small crowd of students, faculty members and others gathered to hear a handful of speakers impart words in celebration of the newest building on campus.

The ribbon cutting ceremony marked the commencement of a full day of events intended as official grand opening for the Campus Center.

Dan Maxwell, director of the Campus Center and main coordinator for the dedication activities, facilitated the ceremony.

The speakers included Mitchum Owen, Graduate Student Organization president, Sharee' Myricks, Undergraduate Student Government president, and four interfaith leaders.

Owen stressed the importance of the collaborative mindset at IUPUI.

"The Campus Center is more than just an example of IUPUI collaboration. To me, it is a beacon declaring that IUPUI has recognized the importance of a collaborative culture and is entering a new era.

"We are fortunate to be a part of IUPUI at a time of true growth and advancement," he said in his speech.

Faith leaders who spoke included Rev. John Lambert of the Bethel A.M.E. church of Indianapolis, Rabbi Aaron Spiegel of the Indianapolis Center for Congregations and Butler University, Father Michael O'Mara of St. Mary's Catholic Church, and Aviva Ali of the Islamic Society of North America.

"We recognize that there are many ways to prayer - to pray and have faith - and these are just four ways that we thought that we would start our way down our path for success here at IUPUI," Maxwell said.

IUPUI employees made rounds through the crowds with containers full of scissors. There was a joint cutting of the ribbon because as Maxwell said, "it is our building,"

A dozen students placed small red scissors to the ribbon while Maxwell held a large, oversized pair. The ribbon fell in many pieces.

There was applause as the commencement adjourned and most of the crowd flood into the structure concerned.
