Four IUPUI students are running for USG President. Elections are held April 1st to April 3rd. Students running are (l to r): Eduardo Nieto, Steve Oetting, Cora Grifin, and Brian Baker.

On the second floor of the IUPUI Campus Center March 25, four presidential candidates for the Undergraduate Student Government held a debate, called "Meet the Candidates," to help students decide whom to vote for.

The USG elections began Tuesday and will continue into Thursday this week. The candidates for the presidential position are Brian Baker, Cora Griffin, Eduardo Nieto and Stephen Oetting.

During the debate, each candidate had about two minutes to talk about the issues they care most about. The issues seemed to have a common theme that there needs to be a change in how things are done at IUPUI. Student voices need to be heard, they said.

Talking about the current state of student voices, Brian Baker said, "We are the customer here at IUPUI and we can't make a demand."

Nieto said students need to be involved in issues that affect the campus.

"We should all work for a common goal," Oetting said.

Chartwells, the Campus Center's food vendor, was a topic of discussion at the debate. Student organizations can only use Chartwells to cater their events, as they are the sole provider of food on the IUPUI campus and the only company that can cater food for the Campus Center.

"The Senate has the contract and will be scanning over it very soon," Griffin said, referring to the Chartwells contract.

Another issue was Chartwells changed their hours and didn't tell students. One student wanted to know if USG had tried to sit down with Chartwells to see if they could experiment with different hours.

After 6:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, the IUPUI Campus Center food court is closed, leaving Outtakes as the only food provider. Some students said they want to have fresh food during the entire 15 hours the Campus Center is open.

"We have invited Chartwells to come to a senate meeting," Griffin said. "We would like them to sit on a board or come to a meeting once a month so we can voice the student concerns."
