Despite a sluggish second half and a scoring run from visiting Western Illinois, the IUPUI women's basketball team won 47-45 in their final regular season game of the season. The win guaranteed a seed of no less than third in the Summit League championships in Tulsa, Okla. next weekend.

"Ending the regular season with a win is great momentum," said Coach Shann Hart. "I wish we were seeded first or second but we will take third."

The first half started quickly with the Jaguars going on a 13-point scoring run. The team scored 18 of its 21 first half points in the paint and shot for 12-for-27 in field goals. The Jaguars led 29-21 at halftime.

The second half was a little slower for the Jaguars as they went just 6-for-26. A pair of 3-pointers from the visiting team tied the score late in the second half. Christina Cunningham saved the effort by scoring three free throws within the last minute of the game.

Coach Hart said, "We had a sluggish start during the second half. (Jernisha) Cann and Julia (Whitted) were good inside tonight but our outside shooters were not so good."

Jernisha Cann led the Jaguars with 17 points and five rebounds, scoring all but seven of those points during the first half. Julia Whitted led the Jaguars in rebounds with 15 and added nine points.

Christina Cunningham, Brykeesha Tate and Nicole James all scored five points for the Jaguars in the game.

Western Illinois' Ashley Davenport led her team during the second half by scoring 20 points in the game. Davenport shot 8-for-12 in field goals and 4-for-6 in 3-pointers.

Talking about Davenport's game play Coach Hart said, "We knew that coming in and we prepared for it."

The next game for the Jaguars will be during the first round Summit League championships this weekend in Tulsa where they will take on Southern Utah University on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. The team is 1-1 against Southern Utah this season. If they win this game, they will move on to the second round on March 10 and take on the winner of Game 2.
