Junior Jernisha Cann became the 18th women's player in IUPUI history to score 1,000th career points Monday night, leading IUPUI to a lopsided 97-45 victory over Centenary in the Jungle.

"It's a big honor," Cann said. "Actually I didn't even find out until last night when I looked on the computer and saw that all I needed was eight more points. I'm just trying to concentrate on the rebounds now."

IUPUI coach Shann Hart was pleased with the big victory in the stretch run of the season.

"It's finally good for us to play some team basketball where we could gel and be able to put up 90 points," she said. "I felt like early in the year when we had the potential to do that, the chemistry wasn't quite there. It's good to see it this time of year and to get the overall effort and performance that we got from everybody."

The Jaguars (13-14, 9-6 Summit) outscored Centenary (3-21, 0-14 Summit) 35-18 in the final 12:03 of the first half to break the game open and claim the huge 53-point victory.

IUPUI's defense and rebounding fueled the huge victory, completely shutting down the Centenary attack. The Jaguars pulled down nearly twice as many rebounds as Centenary, while forcing 22 turnovers. IUPUI also held Centenary to under 33.9 percent shooting from the floor.

"When we play defense the way that we're capable of playing it, it's tough for any team in the league to beat us," Hart said. "When we take nights off and possessions off, that's when we find ourselves in a difficult position. Defensively, I thought we looked good. I thought we did a good job of rebounding the basketball and we just shot the ball well tonight."

In addition, the Jaguars dished out 27 assists, compared to their 10 turnovers.

"I think that a big part of (our assist to turnover ratio) was that we were making shots," Hart said. "We took good shots. We took care of the basketball today."

Farren Stackhouse scored a career-high 23 points. Julia Whitted and Cann each had double-doubles. Whitted had 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Cann had a 16 points and 12 rebounds. Christina Cunningham and Nicole James were also in double figures with 13 and 10 respectively. Brykeesha Tate dished out nine assists.

The 97 points and 53-point margin were season highs for the Jaguars. The victory assured IUPUI of at least a .500 record in the Summit League.

After the pair of home wins over the weekend, IUPUI goes on the road for its next two games-at Oakland (15-9, 8-6 Summit) on Sunday and at IPFW (10-15, 7-7 Summit) on Tuesday.
