"People want to come to a university that is truly diverse," Bantz said. "She is the director of Multicultural Outreach and has years of experience working with students from diverse backgrounds. Plus she has excellent organizational skills."
Stewart-Brinston has served as the chairperson of IUPUI Black Faculty Staff council for five years. During her service as interim director, she will be relieved of all her duties, but she plans to return to her previous position when her time is complete.
Stewart-Brinston will serve in interim position for six months. Then a new director of the Multicultural Center will be chosen. The position will then be open to qualified applicants and will then be selected by a job search committee.
"I've held many positions at IUPUI," Stewart-Brinston said. "Those positions have brought me closer to the diverse students. I have worked in the financial aid office and the admissions office. I have proctored placement testing. In my five years as director of Multicultural Outreach I built it from one single office to seven offices."
Stewart-Brinston has plenty of experience with diverse students because her role as director of Multicultural Outreach was to recruit diverse students to IUPUI. She also worked for the Black Expo for two years.
"If you embrace multicultural diversity everyone will gain, students and faculty," said Stewart-Brinston. "My goal is to get the open space populated with people who are involved in the entity. I love the fact I will be involved in something that will help shape the students and the community here at IUPUI."
In his speech Chancellor Bantz promised those in the audience that IUPUI has a commitment to diversity and that it's time to move from idea to reality.
Future plans for the Multicultural Center include transforming Jag Junction, the former food court, into a multicultural resource library.
