IUPUI Jag Julia Whitted takes a shot against UMKC defenders Saturday night in the Jungle. The team went on to win 65-47.

IUPUI women's basketball team did what it needed to do to stay close to their conference opponents by winning when the team defeated UMKC 65-47 at the Jungle Saturday night.

IUPUI (10-12, 6-4 Summit) had a spirited first half, one of the best first halves for the team this season, shooting 16-for-25. The team scored 22 of its 36 first half points in the paint.

The team started the first half strong by letting the UMKC Kangaroos (9-12, 2-8 Summit) only score two for the first five minutes of the game. The Kangaroos started to rally but the Jaguars outscored the visiting team, earning a 20-point lead with two minutes remaining in the first half.

During the second half the team missed a few chances to steal, but never let UMKC regain the lead. Their shooting slowed down during the second where they shot 8-for-21.

Both Jernisha Cann and Julia Whitted scored 19 points to lead the Jaguars while Nicole James scored 16 points. Whitted also led the Jaguars with eight rebounds and six blocks. Brykeesha Tate led the team with six assists, while Christina Cunningham led the team with five steals.

IUPUI men's basketball team took the momentum from the past three games to finish their four-game home trip undefeated. The team defeated UMKC 90-70 in front of a crowded Jungle Saturday night making them 12-0 in play at home.

A somewhat sluggish start kept the UMKC Kangaroos (8-15, 3-7 Summit) close on the IUPUI Jaguars (16-5, 8-2 Summit) heels during the first half. The team scored 15-for-21 even though they were able to nail six of 12 three-pointers they attempted.

The team took off during the second half outscoring their first half score shooting 19-for-27. The team managed to score 53 points during the second half of the game with George Hill scoring most of his points in the second half.

The team continued its three-point attempts during the second half, which sent the crowd hollering. The team was 4-for-8 in three-pointers, giving it a total of 10 for the night with five coming from Gary Patterson.

Hill, Billy Pettiford, and Jon Avery all had dunks during the game, most in the second half. The dunk by Avery late in the second half sent the sold out crowd to their feet.

Hill led the Jaguars with 23 points and secured another double-double with ten rebounds, his sixth this season. Austin Montgomery contributed a season-best 22 points.

Patterson, the star of the first half of the game, had 17, nailing three three-pointers before halfway into the first half.

Avery contributed 12 points in the game and was the top sub-scoring player. Pettiford lead the team in assists and steals with 11 and 4 respectively.

Both teams go on the road to play North & South Dakota State before returning home. The men's team takes on Centenary on Thursday night.
