The IUPUI College Democrats will be providing students an important service this election year. At the Tuesday, Feb. 12 meeting, voter registration forms will be provided for any students who have yet to register.
Interested students should meet at CE Room 264, located in the new Campus Center. The hour-long meeting will begin at 5 p.m. and last an hour. Club president, Whitney Grout said, she's excited about the opportunity this can give unregistered students.
"This is a great way for students to get involved," Grout said. "With the war and a possible recession, this is a very important presidential election. It's an opportunity for students to voice their opinions.
"It's so easy to register to vote," Grout added. "You just have to show up and fill out a form."
The only thing students need to bring with them to the meeting is a valid Indiana license or identification card. The club will provide forms and directions for submitting them.
Mariel Alcala, a senior political science major, was encouraged upon hearing this news about voter registration.
"This is a very important campaign," Alcala said. "We have a woman and an African American running for president. It's a very big deal and could set a precedent.
"I hope more people vote," Alcala added. "It's cool that the club is doing this. It makes it easier for students. A lot of times students don't know how or the process involved in registering to vote, so they end up not voting. It's kind of like the asking for directions thing."
Amanda Holler, a health information and administration student, said she felt the same way about the voter registration process and the opportunity the College Democrats are providing.
"It's convenient and what busy people are looking for," Holler said. "I just turned 21 and got registered at the BMV. If I didn't get registered when I got my license, I wouldn't know how. I just moved here for school. I wouldn't know where to go to do it."
While Grout is happy about providing students with this opportunity, she is also hopeful that the activity will generate more interest in the College Democrats. President since the fall semester, Grout says the club does not have problems getting speakers or activities, just participants.
"Since we are in the state capital, it isn't hard finding speakers," Grout said. "It's usually a good photo-op for them."
The club meets every other Tuesday and has no requirements to join. The student activity fee pays for most expenses the club has. Food can be found at most meetings as an added incentive to attend.
"We usually listen to speakers and discuss national or international events," Grout said.
Even though Grout is hopeful for more campus participation in the club, she understands the limitations and challenges facing students.
"It's hard with a commuter campus," Grout said. "Students come to class and then have to leave."
It's certainly the dilemma facing Alcala. "When you're working and live away from campus," she said, "it's hard to get involved."
