The new Cultural Arts Gallery will be located on the second floor of the new Campus Center.
"Marching Towards Justice," a new installation for the gallery will be on display from January through March of 2008.
The artwork is from the Damon J. Keith Law Collection of African-American Legal History and has made more than 30 stops throughout the United States in the past six years.
The collection was created to provide people the opportunity to learn about the importance of the 14th Amendment and our country's continued pursuit to realize the high standards of the Declaration of Independence.
Dan Maxwell, the Campus Center director said that he anticipates having six to eight shows a year in the gallery space.
"The new Cultural Arts Gallery will have a wood floor, exposed ceiling and appropriate walls to hang art," said Maxwell. "There will be a reception desk and two to three benches in the middle of the space. Also, the clear glass front wall will be helpful to keep the shows exposed even when the gallery may be closed."
University officials understand the importance of art within a community and kept that in mind during the building's design phase.
"Art is a critical part of our community," said Maxwell. "We have had some beautiful shows in UC [University College] 115; but it is a mixed use space and the concrete block walls do make it a challenge to hang a show. It will be rewarding to have the program relocated into the Campus Center. The location on the second floor will also give the entire program more exposure."
According to the Campus and Community Life Web site "the gallery hosts four shows throughout each university semester which highlight the work of artists who are typically under-represented in the art world."
The gallery strives to raise awareness and appreciation for cultural diversity by providing diverse visual art for students, faculty and staff to enjoy.
