While the new Campus Center promises to be a star attraction, it needs strong leadership to make it run smoothly. Susan Canady works on Dan Maxwell's team as associate director.
"Maxwell and I have been friends for a while," Canady says. "Being a staff member already, [I helped him] by introducing him to Indianapolis as well as to IUPUI.
"I also attended the meetings with Maxwell to help guide him with the creation of the building," she says, tongue-in-cheek.
Canady's responsibilities as associate director include day-to-day things that happen in the building, policies and procedures, and supervising staff.
"I have been working at IUPUI starting as a coordinator of what we now know as Campus and Community Life for eight years," she says. "In the middle of 2006, I joined Maxwell's team as his assistant for the Campus Center."
When she's not working, Canady enjoys music and attending festivals.
"My favorite kind of music is Jazz and the top 40, Christian stations, and I love Barbara Streisand," she says. "I haven't been to any concerts lately, but the last one I attended was Elton John."
The last festival Canady attended was the Greek Fest.
"I do not have the time to go to all of the fests in Indianapolis, since I work, but I do want to go see the Heartland Music Festival," she says.
"With having the majority of festivals held at Military Park, most people that come out here think that Military Park is a part of the IUPUI campus," Canady says. "I think when people come to the festivals at Military Park, they will see our Campus Center and want to learn more of what it is all about."
With this in mind, Maxwell and Canady are actually becoming a part of a campaign for IUPUI.
The new Center will bring publicity and media to the new building without having to do very much marketing or public relations.
The building will do all of this by itself.
