When the Campus Center opens its doors this Spring, some features of the new state-of-the-art building will not be ready.
Campus Center officials are still in need of approximately $750,000 to finish the theatre and another $1 million for the 12 bell chimes for the bell tower.
The theatre in the Campus Center, which will be located on the lower level of the building, will seat 250 people.
Officials plan to use the theatre for many events, such as Student Activities Programming Board's JagFlicks series. The JagFlicks series shows recently released movies to students with a valid student ID, providing students with a fun and inexpensive place to hang out.
Campus Center director Dan Maxwell says, "The theatre will be open for groups to hold movies, comedy acts, small concerts and plays. Some of the schools can host their lecture series in there as well."
The Bell Tower, which is the highest point on campus, will have all 12 bells chime every hour during the day.
Maxwell says of the Bell Tower, "It's a very visible and significant part of the building's design."
In order to secure funds for the Bell Tower project, the Indiana University Foundation will spearhead a fundraising campaign. No firm date has been set on when the campaign will begin, but it will likely take place after the new Center opens.
Maxwell explains that several of the ideas they have already considered reasons why people would want to make a donation towards the Bell Tower.
"It could be their love for IU, Purdue or IUPUI. Their love for the Campus Center, and what it represents, or the fact that they love bells," Maxwell says. "You can even do class projects with a campaign for each bell. For instance, maybe the Class of 1956 could buy one bell."
They hope to have the funding in a year but they know that might not be possible.
"I would love to be able to say that we will be able to open it up a year from now, but no matter when the funds come about, the Campus Center will only benefit from having the Bell Tower complete," Maxwell says.
