WNOU, Radio Now 93.1, listeners got a surprise during the morning commute Oct., 19 when the radio station was replaced with Christmas music. The change came after the decision by station owner Emmis Communications to expand WIBC to the 93.1 frequency for sports programming.
The switch will be complete on Jan.7.
The Radio Now morning show, called The Morning Mess features personalities Marco, Shannon and Mikey. The three were to return to station that Tuesday after a seven-day cruise but were informed of the format change the day before their return.
"Everyone thinks that Emmis was bad and rude but they were nothing but great," Shannon said. "It was a business decision and they really have been nothing but great."
Radio One purchased WNOU and had music up and running on the new frequency, 100.9, in just a few days.
Indianapolis was introduced to the Morning Mess in January 2005. The three morning show hosts all came from different backgrounds. Marco had a radio show in Nashville,, Mikey from Indiana University and Shannon from Butler University.
The new station had some skeptical about the morning show with controversial segments, but Emmis let the show continue the segments and listeners loved them. The show had several popular segments such as prank calls, War of the Roses, the Mystery Box and the Morning Mess DUI Lock-up List.
Listens can rest assured that every radio segment was true and they were not made up.
"Marco would come in really early or after the show and wouldn't stop until he got someone funny," Shannon said about the prank calls." And I got to love doing War of the Roses [a segment to catch cheating significant others]."
The typical day for the group was not just their four hours on the air.
"We were at the station at 4 a.m. and we didn't leave until 4 p.m.," Shannon said.
The Morning Mess did not just do the segments but the radio hosts also were involved with several events and people around Indianapolis.
