Beginning Jan. 1, 2008, IUPUI will stop printing paper checks for its employees.
By Dec. 10, all monthly Indiana University employees must enroll to receive their paychecks by direct deposit into their checking account. Biweekly employees should sign up by Dec.17, said Juletta Toliver, associate director of financial transaction processing at IUPUI.
"It was a decision made at the university level," said Toliver.
According to Toliver, decreasing the amount of lost checks and getting checks to employees in a timely manner are some of the main reasons for this new policy.
IUPUI's campus has about two hundred employees currently receiving paper checks. Most of these are "grandfathered" employees, employees who starting working for IUPUI before 1997, said Toliver.
Excluding the grandfather employees, ninety-six percent of IUPUI employees receive direct deposit.
"I've heard no complaints from employees…I have heard people asking for other alternatives, which the policy offers," said Toliver.
According to the new policy, for employees who are unable to have their funds directly deposited into the bank account of their choice, IU will provide a re-loadable Visa Checkcard where they will deposit all wages and salaries.
"This provides a viable alternative to those who cannot open a savings or checking account," said Toliver.
However, employees must sign up for this service. For those who do not sign up for this or direct deposit before January 1, 2008, their checks will be sent out in the mail, two days prior to their payday, to the address listed on their W2 tax form.
While the policy is required for almost all employees, there is an exception. The policy states that students with work-study appointments will be exempt from this requirement and can still receive paper checks if desired.
