The Indianapolis Academy of Music presented the Freaky Fall Fiddle Fest Sunday at the Indianapolis Artsgarden.
Audience members lounged at tables and on the stairs at the Artsgarden as they listened to the Academy students play violins and cellos. Dressed in formal attire, these young musicians plucked away at pieces ranging from the simple "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" to more upbeat songs such as the "Witches Dance" and "Fiddle Faddle." Performers were grouped based on their level of experience.
A costume change was also thrown into the mix to accompany the music, as the conductor and her musicians donned mule hats while performing "Floppy-Eared Mule." Lyrics were added to some songs, with performers singing as they played.
In addition to the musical entertainment, the event also featured a story. The story, entitled "Scary Monster in Your Wardrobe" was read by a narrator while students provided instrumental soundtrack as well as sound effects such as giggling, a pounding heart and a door opening.
Honors were presented to families that donated items to the academy and to the performers as Rose Melton, who won first place in this year's solo competition on the violin.
Audience member Kim Zamora, said she enjoyed the performance, even though she didn't have a child performing.
"I love seeing children taking an interest in music," Zamora said.
The Indianapolis Academy of Music was established thirty years ago and currently has more than 125 participants. Students receive traditional and Suzuki-based instruction by the faculty there. Students can also take part in theory and orchestra classes. Classroom learning is a major aspect of the academy, as was demonstrated at the Freaky Fall Fiddle Fest.
