"Stuff Happens" by David Hare is a captivating portrayal of the events surrounding Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld's commentary on the news that Baghdad was being robbed after the fall of Saddam Hussein.

"Freedom's untidy and free people are free to make mistakes and commit crimes and do bad things," Rumsfeld said to reporters in 2003. "They're also free to live their lives and do wonderful things. And that's what's going to happen here."

Looting, he added, was not uncommon for countries that experience significant social upheaval. "Stuff happens," Rumsfeld said.

During the 3-hour long play, Hare delivers the events leading up to the war in Iraq.

The main characters are George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Condoleezza Rice, Colin Powell, and Tony Blair.

The actors play their characters so well, it is almost hard to believe they are actors and not the real thing.

The play explores subjects such as how the world settles its differences, how far diplomacy can go to ease relations between countries, and what happens when world leaders gather behind closed doors.

"Stuff Happens" is performed in the Frank & Katrina Basile Theatre at the Phoenix, and runs Oct. 25 through Nov.18.

Shows start Thursdays at 7 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m.
