Indianapolis' Halloween scene has become more hands-on and scary. There are more ghouls, goblins and monsters. Here is a guide to some of the scarier haunted houses around the city.
Hannah Haunted House
Located at 3801 Madison Avenue is Indianapolis' only real haunted house. It has opened this year to show the ghost hunters and Halloween lovers the true meaning of spine-tingling fright. The tour guides enact the mansion's history through sights and hauntings that have occurred in each room. The basement leads everyone out to the theatrical haunted house where goblins wait.
Admission: $10 includes historic mansion tour and haunted house.
Times and Dates: Oct. 26 and 27, from 7 p.m. to 12 a.m.
Hannah Haunted Acres
Located at 7328 E. Hanna Avenue, the Hannah Haunted Acres sits on a farm with three haunted houses, a hayride and a corn maze. This year there are more chainsaws and spooks, too. The hayride has special props and effects, including ride-a-long monsters. The maze makes participants feel, well, helpless.
Admission: The five-attractions package is $27; the Hayride and Acres Manor package is $15; the Hayride is $12; Phantazmagoria is $10; Hell's ½ Acre is $10; Entanglement Maze is $10; and Acres Manor is $8.
Times and Dates: Oct. 23 to 31 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday. Open until 12 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.
Scream on Shortridge
Located at 801 S. Shortridge Road is a haunted hayride that raises funds for Lowell Little League teams. This hayride is anything but dull. The monsters crawl everywhere on the ride. The special effects are freaky; ghouls swing from trees. Plus, a surprise awaits passengers on their way to the finish line.
Admission: $10 per rider.
Times and Dates: Oct. 25 through 30. Rides start after dark around 7 p.m.
Nightmare on Edgewood
Held at Edgewood Athletic Association at 6004 Camden Street, this haunted house is a hands-on haunted experience. A vampire guide informs the visitors to not touch the spooks because they touch back. And that makes it terrifying. Demons grab ankles and Michael Meyers caresses hair. There are tricks around every corner.
Admission: $13 to $18.
Times and Dates: Oct. 26, 27, 29, 30 and 31., from 8 p.m. to 12 a.m.
Intense Madness
Located at 6347 E. Washington St. is Irvington Plaza's new addition this Halloween season. This haunted building has the loudest soundtrack, which makes it easy for ghosts and monsters sneak around. The strobe lights cause a scary blindness while the dead are electrocuted.
Admission: $10
Times and Dates: Open until Oct. 31., 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, open until 12 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, and until 10 p.m. on Sunday.
