John Stoddard, a graduate student in business, carpools with his sister the 30 minutes to class and drives alone for work. He recently purchased a Volkswagon Rabbit, which is fuel-efficient, compared with his old car. "I would try the Indygo student pass if it was efficient but I have several concerns over route schedules and a certain lack of control when using a bus," says Stoddard.
Senior social work major Jessica Lee, is a single mother and fifth year student. The gas prices have impacted her life a great deal. With this being her last year, not only does she have to drive to campus but she has to drive to an internship as well. She takes her daughter to school, which is near her home, but campus is downtown and her internship is east. Due to her heavy commute, the rising gas prices have hit her hard in the pocketbook because she fills up twice a week -if she can afford to. Her advice to other students on saving money: "carpool if possible or take classes online."
Patrick Flynn, a senior in new media says he feels a serious gas crunch because he lives in Shelbyville. He currently drives a 2005 Honda CRV. He has been trying to fill up as Kroger gas stations to use their gas card, but will bargain-hunt within his usual route. He won't take the student pass because he simply lives too far from any useable route. He also believes that route hopping may be unsafe.
