The Apartments on the Riverwalk Council, also called Hall Council, is a representative body of about 20 residents from the campus apartments. Council members said they hoped to create a sense of community among residents and other IUPUI students with the "Pumpkin Bash," its first major event of the year.
Festivities will begin 7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 30, with a showing of a horror movie in the Housing Courtyard, located at the intersection of Porto Allegre Drive and Vermont Street. Free food also will be available.
Following the movie, the "scaritory" decorating contest will begin at 9 p.m. Residents in the campus apartments are divided into three communities, and in this activity, students representing each community are given two hours and a variety of ghoulish decorations to deck out their respective rooms. Decorators with the best "scaritory" will win a pizza party.
Starting at 8 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 31, a dance, costume contest and various Halloween activities will fill the night. Bobbing for apples and caramel-apple making are among the activities planned, and winners of the costume contest get to smash pumpkins.
"My hope is for every resident to come," said Jacqui Blessing, resident assistant liaison with Hall Council. "I'd like people just to come out of their rooms, come outside and see what's going on."
Andrew Kimmel, president of Hall Council and sophomore IUPUI student, says housing events are excellent ways to "meet people outside of your house, your classes or scholarship program."
Almost 750 undergraduate, graduate and professional students live in the campus apartments, and this year, Kimmel said, the apartments are at full capacity.
One of the main objectives of Hall Council is to promote a feeling of belonging by providing social and educational opportunities. Many students take advantage of these events.
"We've had between 200 and 300 people come to our big events last year," Kimmel said.
Some of last year's major activities that are expected to return include a winter kickoff for next semester, Valentine's Day dance, spring luau and summer slam. Hall Council also may host smaller events such as stress-relieving parties with free massages and prizes.
In addition to coordinating events, Hall Council exists to address issues that concern IUPUI residents.
"This year I want to pursue safety," Kimmel said. "I would like everyone to get involved, so every voice is heard."
Kimmel also said he hopes Hall Council will continue to be the voice for students on campus.
"We have a very active group [representing Hall Council], and I hope we can build on the progress and success of last year," he said.
