Why is Arsenal Tech so calm about this?

Ron Gamble

Issue date: 10/17/07 Section: Commentary
Monday, Oct.8, someone posted flyers around the grounds of Arsenal Tech High School, supposedly from the KKK (Klu Klux Klan). The flyers threatened any students of ethic origin other than white who plan on attending school Oct. 31.

It is disturbing that something like this still occurs in a social setting that is so complex but I have a question here, "Why is Arsenal looking at this threat so calmly?"

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department has taken this matter a bit more seriously with additional officers to be dispatched around the school on the 31st.

This is a good idea, especially in the wake of recent events; the Virginia Tech incident from the beginning of the year, the incident that occurred in Jena, Louisiana that sparked racial tension in that town, and most recently the shooting in Cleveland.

It is to the point that parents are terrified to send their children to school (which was theoretically the safest place for a child to be other than home) and who could be blame them. As a parent, I understand that it's part of our parental duties to be protective and part of that protection is to have some idea of what's going on in your child's personal life.

I brought up the fact about knowing about your child's daily challenges, because knowing what they can or cannot handle can mean a great deal for them as well as the people with whom they associate.

This could be seen as a valid point in the Ohio incident. The suspect who allegedly shot several people had social problems with bullies, according to his uncle.

Larry Looney, neighbor of Asa Coon, the alleged shooter, said, "He said he really didn't do anything to start it. He said the teachers wouldn't listen to his side of the story."

This statement was in regard to a fight earlier in the week that Coon was involved with and that resulted in his three-day suspension.

I'm sure somewhere in this young man's life there were a few cries for help that if noticed, may have prevented the tragedy that cost so many so much.
