IUPUI offers ways to beat stress

Issue date: 10/17/07 Section: College News
With midterms in full swing and the second half of the semester underway, students are scrambling to find time to do everything. In the process, students might find themselves searching for ways to cope with stress, anxiety and time management. IUPUI offers solutions such as stress-management classes, as well as Yoga and Pilates classes to beat the pressure of tests and projects.

The first step is to determine what is causing the stress, so the body can prepare to deal with it. "When you're stressed, your body shuts down, and physically makes you sick," said Chuck Crosby, a yoga instructor at IUPUI.

"Yoga," said Crosby, "It is all about breathing." "Tension will increase if you don't breathe properly, which will cause more stress to your body," said Crosby.

It can be a cleanser to your body to spend just one hour a week to relaxing. IUPUI facilitates this help with this by offering inexpensive Yoga and Pilates classes to all students. Students pay a small $15 fee per semester as IUPUI's recreational fee to join and classes are held three times a week.

Beginners should know when they sign up for these classes that Yoga poses are not always as easy as they might seem; many require concentration and muscle strength. Yoga, however, helps to calm the nervous system as well as stretches the muscles.

Pilates is different because it requires much more concentration with the movements. It can be more intense, using various leg and arm movements at the same time.

"With Mat Pilates, you breathe through your nose and out your mouth, but in yoga, it is all through the nose," Crosby said.

Many students wonder what the advantages are in taking a class as opposed to working out or using a Pilates or Yoga video instead.

"It is hard to look up at a screen when you are a beginner," Crosby said. "You can't have the instructor correct or enhance you."

Many students just want help with stress management in general. One class offered is H180, a course aimed at helping students cope with everyday stress.
