A Pennsylvanian juror has selected the first-place winner for the 25th annual Watercolor Society of Indiana exhibit at the Indianapolis Museum of Art.

Juror James Toogood-a nationally renowned artist, teacher and author- selected "Sweet Dreams" by Howard Scott for the Wilbur Meese Memorial Award, the WSI's first-place distinction.

"This painting was extremely inventive, completely unique and great fun," Toogood said of Scott's painting.

Since 1982, the WSI has set the highest artistic standards in watercolor painting. Each year, the society recognizes its talented members by exhibiting their work at the IMA.

Toogood selected only 52 out of 191 entries to appear at the exhibit. He then picked 10 award winners from the 52 exhibited paintings, but the winners are not made public until the day of the award ceremony at the IMA.

"For the award winners I looked for strong statements of originality and overall excellence in execution," Toogood said.

The exhibition will be open to the public until Oct. 27.

The WSI and the IMA also are presenting "Chat with an Artist Program," each Thursday and Sunday during the exhibit. A volunteer artist will paint in the gallery and answer questions about watercolor painting.

"Painting is a unique and powerful, visual language that artists use to express their ideas and feelings, their interests and their passions," Toogood said.
