The world languages and cultures department celebrated Oktoberfest IUPUI -style last week, underneath the business breezeway. Bratwurst, pastries and hot apple cider were provided, as well as traditional German music and readings from Kurt Vonnegut's "The Man Without a Country."

Vonnegut, who passed away in April, was a German-American novelist and Indianapolis native. His works were profoundly influenced by tragedies he endured, like when his mother committed suicide on Mother's Day 1944 and his ordeal as a prisoner of war in Dresden, Germany during World War II. Some of his other works include "The Slaughterhouse Five," "Cat's Cradle" and "Jailbird."

"He's really one of the great German-Americans of Indianapolis," said Giles Hoyt of the IUPUI Department of German and Philanthropic Studies.

Mayor Bart Peterson proclaimed 2007 as the year of Vonnegut, and in coordination with the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library, The Indianapolis Cultural Development Commission as well as surviving members of Vonnegut's family, there will be events held throughout the city to commemorate his life and work.

More information can be found at www.yearofvonnegut.org.

Oktoberfest is celebrated in many different countries; however the largest gatherings are in Munich and Bavaria Germany, where over 6 million people gather annually to enjoy beer, food, music and good times.

In Germany, festivities traditionally begin in late September and continue to the first Sunday in October. Celebrations in the U.S. occur in September and October.
