Campus safety and security are topics of concern on campuses around the nation. After several reports of safety issues on the IUPUI campus, The Sagamore decided to take a look at campuses similar to IUPUI to find out how they structured campus safety awareness and prevention, what safety tips were posted on these schools' websites and how easy it was to find them. These campuses, like IUPUI, are in an urban environment and share many of the same characteristics. Also included are some major in state campuses. IUPUI helped found a project in 1998 called The Urban Universities Portfolio Project with five other schools from around the nation, all of which all had similar learning environments. The Sagamore found information from all five of these schools, as well as IU Bloomington and Purdue.
IU Bloomington does a lot of work to make sure students remain safe in almost any situation. Throughout the year the school sponsors several events to promote student safety and awareness. Not only does the school hold seminars, but they also have created a Commission on Public Safety to make students aware of possible threats to their safety.
Incoming students receive safety awareness information, and during Orientation, CPS committee members talk to parents and students about issues and resources related to personal safety. Indiana University even has a web site entitled "Toward An Even Safer Campus," with safety information, as well as tips for making the community a safer place. IU Bloomington also advertises campus safety by hanging safety posters and banners around campus.
Purdue University created a committee called Campus Safety Task Force in 1989 to look at ideas and ways to increase safety on campus.
The Force is made up of students, security officers, the dean of the students, two Clerical and Service Staff Advisory Committee at Purdue, representatives, and one Association of Professional Substance Abuse Counsellors member. The diversity of the group allows the task force to see issues from a variety of perspectives. Purdue also holds a student forum on safety and a Community Safety Awareness day to allow students to have fun while learning about safety on campus.
