Animal adoptions must be done in person at the HSI. They are unable to hold an animal or start the adoption process based on phone calls.
Every animal available for adoption goes through an evaluation that looks at their health, history and behavior.
"I would've got my pets from the humane society rather than the pet store," says Stacy Blanton, an IUPUI employee. I would think if you have kids, read up on the animals, get the temperament and personality of each and get background on their breed and breeder when you get them."
The HSI enables potential owners to read about the animals up for adoption by referencing the multi-colored kennel cards located with each animal.
The kennel cards show results of the evaluation to help potential owners decide which animal is best for them.
Some animals will not be able to be taken home right away. Lost animals brought to HSI must be held for four days before they are available for adoption.
Potential owners interested in adopting a lost animal pay a $20 fee that will hold the animal. The money will be taken as a donation if the animal is reclaimed or not adopted. If adopted, the $20 will be credited to adoption fees.
Susan Nestor has adopted and given an animal up for adoption at the HSI. She had adopted her cat Daisy in June 2007.
"It was easy to work with the signs to learn about the pets," says Nestor.
Nestor recently took a stray cat to the HSI.
"It takes $20 for them to take them. I would definitely take a cat there rather than leave them on the street," she said.
Animals can also be placed on hold and the same $20 process fee will apply.
Holds can only be processed one animal at a time and are valid until the end of the following business day with the exception of the four business day hold period.
Once a person finds the animal they are interested in adopting, the kennel card can be brought to the front desk.
Each person will fill out an adoption profile and undergo an interview process before taking the animal home. Staff members discuss any issues with the animals needing to be addressed at that time.
