"All of a sudden, we found out there was no more money," said Shuennhau Chang, ASU treasurer.

For students, there is a new reality: Instead of turning to Campus and Community Life (CCL), students must find other sources to fund their programs. Quiroz's sorority members are turning to family and friends for support. Other organizations are going back to fundraising.
The alarm awakes Katie Buxton early on a Thursday morning. She hits the snooze button a few times before actually getting the strength to climb out of bed. For the IUPUI student, the day will be long. Most of her time will be spent in class, in the Math Assistance Center and finishing homework in an IT building computer lab.

Gamers' Guild President Drew Day wants his IUPUI student organization to be taken more seriously.

"We are bigger than what people realize - gaming is bigger than what people realize," Day says. "There are so many people that game on this campus."

Day says those people come in droves to the education building for Friday meetings, where students can hang out and share their various gaming passions: everything from Halo 3 to Dungeons and Dragons.

This year students paid an accumulated $4 million in activity fees, of which approximately 80 percent goes toward the Campus Center.

Kevin Walsh, fiscal officer for Academic Affairs and Student Life, said while each funded unit under this fee creates quarterly or monthly financial reports, no single person or department keeps records of how all units use their funds.

IUPUI currently lists on its website 306 student organizations, all of them able to get a piece of the money that is made available to them by the university through student fees.

For the 2008-2009 school year, IUPUI collected nearly $4 million in fees. Of the $4 million, only $155,000 was available for student organizations: $125,000 from the Student Organization Grant Fund (SOG) and $30,000 from the Educational Enhancement Grant Fund (EEG).
